Some further advice

Both the University Library and the State Library (WLB) currently offer regular lending or reference services with access restrictions.

The library's stock currently includes more than 40,000 publications relevant to the discipline. of art history In addition, selected journals, yearbooks and encyclopaedias are continually subscribed to. Sufficient workstations, some of them with research possibilities, are available for students during the opening hours of the library.

The stock is continually being expanded for the two main research areas of at the Institute of Art History: Early Modern and Modern Art. Furthermore, the library is characterised by its relevance for the study of artworks in the region due to its cooperation with other Stuttgart institutions. Thus, there are numerous publications on the topography of Stuttgart as well as locally specific source material. In addition, the library has current inventory catalogues and exhibition catalogues.

The Institute's media centre offers users the opportunity to create high-quality digital images for presentations and papers to be written (see "Scanning service"). In addition, equipment can be lent out from the media centre. Digitised images are added to the "prometheus image archive" as well as the in-house image database "EasyDB", the latter also serving as a support for teaching at the institute. The media centre can provide accounts for both image databases to members and students of the Institute of Art History.

Furthermore, the media library holds approximately 120,000 small as well as large scale slides. In addition, it holds a historical picture archive, consisting of a photo collection (Otto Schmitt picture archive), a glass slide collection and a postcard collection, which is of great interest due to many pre-war photographs of the Stuttgart area. In a long-term project, the collection is being digitised and made accessible via the aforementioned image databases.

Common Services

Two PC workstations are available for students in the library and media centre during opening hours. These are used for internet research and are also equipped with the standard office programmes. The PCs are each connected to a scanner on which the students themselves (or with the support of the staff) can produce and process digital copies of images.

In addition, the library and media centre staff provide advice on image research via Prometheus. Since campus access via VPN also works well outside the university again, individual access accounts will no longer be created from now on. If students have any questions or difficulties, they can of course contact the staff in person or by email.

Instructions for setting up the VPN connection can be found here: https://www.tik.uni-stuttgart.de/support/anleitungen/vpn/

If faculty members have set up a semester apparatus for their course, it can be found in the second room of the library. The books can only be consulted in the library during opening hours and cannot be borrowed over the weekend.

Students can set up a working aparatus in the library. The library staff will show them how.

The Institute's library is a reference library. During the lecture period, students of the institute, members of the university and external students can therefore only borrow books over the weekend or by the hour to make copies.

As a rule, the following books may not be borrowed:

  • Encyclopaedias, reference works, handbooks, bibliographies, journals as well as collection and inventory catalogues.
  • Books with the shelfmarks A, B, C, Ta, Tb, Z and Yf.
  • Books from the semester and working collections.

Weekend lending of a maximum of three titles is is possible on Thursdays from 13:00 during the lecture period. (as of 02.12.2021). The books must be returned on the following Monday by 13:00 at the latest.

If Thursday is a public holiday, books can be borrowed on Wednesdays from 13:00. During the lecture-free period, books are borrowed on Thursdays from 13:00 until Tuesday 13:00.

For borrowing, an ID card must be deposited (for students of the Institute the yellow library card, for external students the student ID card). External students must present their identity card to verify their details.

A deposit of 2.50 € per book is charged, which is kept by the library staff together with the ID card. If the books are not returned on the following opening day by 13:00 at the latest, the deposit will not be refunded.

A laptop can be borrowed for presentations in a course. The seminar rooms have beamers installed. All devices must be reserved in advance by the lecturers. Collection takes place in the media library before the session. When borrowing the equipment, the student ID must be deposited and the operating instructions must be followed. The laptop must be returned directly after the course!

The media centre also possesses a beamer, a reflex camera, a video recorder, slide projectors and an overhead projector, which can be borrowed for study purposes after consultation.

FAQs

Jackets, bags, umbrellas, etc. must be locked in the lockers in the corridor before entering the library/media centre. All users are also asked to show the staff all books, laptops, documents, etc. they have brought with them when entering and leaving the rooms, to check that they do not belong to our collections. This will help to avoid any misunderstandings.

Eating and drinking is not allowed on the premises of the library/media centre.

Books from the work and semester aparatus are to be returned by the users to the respective shelves. All other books are to be deposited on the book trolley in room 2 for the library staff after use.

The University of Stuttgart has subscribed to the prometheus image archive via campus licence, which allows access to the website directly from the university network. To use the image archive from a computer outside this network, for example from home, a VPN connection to the University of Stuttgart must be established. How to do this is explained here. On the website of the prometheus image archive you will now find the field "Campus access University of Stuttgart" under the regular LogIn.
