Study programme and courses offered

Institute of Art History (IKG)

The subject of the study of art history is European art from the early Christian era (late antiquity) to the present day, comprising the genres of architecture, sculpture, painting, graphic art, arts and crafts and new media.

The study of art history enables students to independently and critically analyse and interpret works of art with regard to their origin, form, content and meaning. Specialist terminology and comprehensive knowledge of monuments will be acquired in order to be able to identify and date works of fine art and to evaluate them historically in their contexts. A deliberate approach to research literature, source material and scientific methods is fundamental to achieve this. Possible fields of professional practice are opened up to Bachelor's students through internships and practical courses. The Master's programme introduces students to research-relevant topics and deepens their knowledge of original works of art. In addition, the methods, the history of the discipline itself and interdisciplinary approaches are critically reflected upon as part of the studies. The Master's degree enables students to subsequently pursue a doctorate.

The career spectrum for art history graduates is wide-ranging, both Bachelor's and Master's degrees can be used in many areas of cultural life: Galleries, auction houses, journalism, publishing etc. For many professions, a doctorate is a prerequisite (e.g. museum work, monument conservation, university).
